Long Son Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha

Long Son Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha

VIETNAM, Khanh Hoa, Nha Trang

This statue of Sakyamuni Buddha is 14 m high and sits on a base which is 10 m high. It is currently the tallest Buddha statue in Vietnam. It was designed by Phuc Dien and completed in 1965.
The Buddha sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne that is 10 m in diameter. The statue and throne are painted white. The Buddha wears a robe that covers both shoulders and has thick folds running across the body in gentle curves. The Buddha forms the dhyana (meditation) mudra.
There are high reliefs on the sides of the base depicting the seven martyred monks who immolated themselves in protest against the persecution of Buddhism. In keeping with the grim subject matter, each relief is surrounded by flames.
