Dambulla Cave 2: Buddhas

Dambulla Cave 2: Buddhas

SRI LANKA, Central Province, Matale

There are over 50 life-sized Buddha statues preserved in Dambulla Cave 2, the majority of which are located along the wall. In addition, eight Buddhas sit on a raised platform around a stupa with a spiked spire on the right side of cave. The Buddhas all have neat, curled hair topped with an ornamental flame. Their round faces have deep-set eyes and high-bridged noses, and there are three lines around their necks. The Buddhas wear either plain or densely folded monastic robes draped over the left shoulder. Each figure is overlaid with gold foil, giving them a divine appearance.
