Daeseungsa Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha Assembly

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Mungyeong; Joseon dynasty

These carvings illustrating the Buddha’s teachings are made from 11 pieces of wood. They were listed as Treasure No. 575 in 1973.
The Buddha sits at the center on an elaborate lotus throne surrounded by 24 figures including Bodhisattvas, the Four Heavenly Kings, heavenly beings, and Arhats, all of which are arranged symmetrically. Each figure is depicted in a different pose while carrying their attributes, such as lotus, jewel, sword, pipa, or a monk’s staff. The canopy over the figures has smaller Buddhas and apsaras, while the base is decorated with flowers. The gilding is varied with tints of red and blue.
