Sanchi Stupa 1: Life of the Buddha - Conversion of the Three Kasyapa Brothers

INDIA, Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi

The relief is located on the front of the south column on the eastern gateway.
During the Buddha’s visit to Uruvilva Kasyapa, the Nairanjana River flooded and the Buddha saved himself by causing an island to rise. When the yogi rowed out to rescue him, the Buddha rose into the air and appeared in the middle of the boat.
The relief that depicts the miracle therefore portrays a scene of inundation with half submerged trees running down either side of the slab. Lotuses and waterfowl float on the water and a crocodile swims into view on the top left corner. The bearded Uruvilva Kasyapa is in the middle of the river, accompanied by a companion. They have paddled out and are joined by the Buddha. The large slab at the bottom appears to have arrested the advance of the waters.
