Red sandstone
This relief once decorated the lintel of a stupa gateway in Mathura and depicts the visit of Sakra to the meditating Buddha. The central figure is seated on a straw mat within a cave indicated by striated rock formations. The Buddha is seated in a full lotus position with the right hand in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. It is noteworthy that the soles are facing outwards, to show the symbols there that are common to Buddhas. Lined on either side of the cave entrance are heavenly beings who have come to pay their respects. On the right is Sakra, identified by the high crown, accompanied by female heavenly beings. The other side features more heavenly beings wearing buoyant stoles and belts, and carrying offerings or joining palms in reverence.
