Seokguram Grotto: Sakyamuni Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty

This Sakyamuni Buddha statue is located in the center of the main chamber and is Seokguram Grotto’s main Buddha sculpture. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a 1.33 m high Sumeru throne. The figure’s expression is solemn and dignified. The right hand forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra, while the left hand is placed in front of the abdomen. The folds of the robe hanging over the left shoulder are smooth. A nimbus carved with a lotus pattern along its edge is seen on the wall behind the Buddha.
