Dharma Instruments

MONGOLIA

Originally comprised of 12 pieces, this set of seven instruments consists of a wisdom sword, a trident, a hammer, an ax, a hook, a phurpa, and a chopper. Each has a handle in the form of a three-prong vajra.
The sword is usually held by Manjusri Bodhisattva and Mahakala, and the trident by Mahakala and Heavenly Kings. The style of the hammer, ax, and hook are similar, with a vajra at the end of each instrument. The phurpa, used to demarcate sacred ground, has a short handle with a sharp end. The chopper has a crescent-shape edge and is held by Mahakala or a dakini.
