Shitennoji Temple: Amitabha Buddha Triad

JAPAN, Osaka; Heian period

The triad of Amitabha Buddha with the two Bodhisattvas was carved in the 10th century. The work is recorded as a triad in the temple records, however, the difference in style, material, and carving technique between the Buddha and attendants suggest they were not initially a triad. There is speculation that the two Bodhisattvas might have originally come from another location in the temple. Nevertheless, the triad is listed as an Important Cultural Property.
The head, body, and legs of the Amitabha statue are cut from a single block of nutmeg wood to which other parts were attached. The figure sits in half lotus position on a triple-tier lotus throne. Amitabha wears a monastic robe, and has both hands in the highest grade of the lowest class mudra.
A unique aspect of this triad is the two attendant Bodhisattvas. They have one of their legs bent in a rare stance. The Bodhisattva on the left is in anjali (reverence) mudra while the turned-up palms of the other Bodhisattve may once have held an offering. The Bodhisattva statues are carved from whole blocks of cypress wood and painted.
