Fo Guang Shan Lan Yang Temple: Amitabha Buddha

TAIWAN, Yilan

The statue is a modern reinterpretation of figures from the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534). Originally, it was kept in the Lecture Hall of the Yilan Buddhist Chanting Association at Lei Yin Temple, which became Fo Guang Shan Lan Yang Temple after its reconstruction in 1996. The Lecture Hall was torn down so the statue has been moved to Fo Guang Shan Monastery where it is currently kept.
Amitabha’s hands are held in the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. A monastic robe covers the left shoulder but is pulled forward to drape over the right shoulder. A swastika is on the exposed chest and the figure stands on a double lotus pedestal.
