Amoghasiddhi Buddha

CHINA

This thangka was painted in Central Tibet during the first half of the 13th century. The green-colored Amoghasiddhi Buddha wears a crown decorated with ribbons that curl around the head. The bare upper body is adorned with necklaces and decorative ornaments. Amoghasiddhi, wearing a lower garment with colorful horizontal stripes, sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne. The Buddha’s right hand displays the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra, and the left hand is placed in front of the abdomen. The red palms of the hands and soles of the feet are especially conspicuous. Amoghasiddhi has an oval-shaped nimbus and an aureole decorated with colorful horizontal stripes. The Buddha is flanked by Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Maitreya Bodhisattva. Wearing crowns and ornaments, they stand in symmetrical tribhanga postures inclined towards Amoghasiddhi. In the upper register of the painting, there are eight Bodhisattvas displaying mudras. At the bottom of the picture, five Six-Armed Taras are shown. In the bottom right corner, a monk sits beside offerings including a stupa and a butter lamp.
