Kunzang Namgyel

Kunzang Namgyel was born into a family of influential artists in Lhasa, Tibet. He learned traditional Tibetan painting from both his father and the renowned artist, Yeshe Gyatso. He was involved in the renovation of the Takten Migyur Palace in Norbulingka Palace, and due to his outstanding work, he was promoted the position of deputy head master of construction.
He joined the Tibet Lhasa Guyi Construction Art Department in 1980, and became a member of the team that was assigned to the restoration of the important artworks in the Maitreya Shrine of Tashilhunpo Monastery, as well as Jokhang Temple. One of his most well-known works is a thangka painting entitled the Five Patriarchs of the Sakya School. The composition of the piece is detailed and vibrant with distinctive figures. Kunzang Namgyel was eventually honored with the title Great Master of China Art and Craft by China in 1989. His extant works can be found at many of the famous heritage sites within Tibet.
