Unjusa Temple: Buddha Niche

SOUTH KOREA, South Jeolla, Hwasun; Goryeo dynasty

Stone pagodas and Buddha niches are scattered between the valley entrance and the peak. This Buddha niche is located at the valley entrance, and it was listed as Treasure No. 797 in 1984.
The massive niche is built from a number of stone slabs in the shape of a ridged cottage with a doorway to roof level. There are two seated figures inside, one facing the north and the other south. The Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea states that “A stone house and two stone Buddhas sitting back-to-back.” The figure facing north sits in full lotus position with raised hands enveloped by the monastic robe.
