This mural is in the middle of the back (west) wall and is the earliest illustration at Dunhuang of the Buddha’s Parinirvana. Sakyamuni Buddha rests on his right side between sala trees at the city of Kushinagar. Both arms lie straight at his sides, and behind the Buddha are two rows of grieving figures. The front row is composed of monks with nimbuses, and the back row contains lay disciples, all with expressions of bereavement. Mahakasyapa kneels at the feet of the Buddha and is dressed in a white robe. Behind the disciples are four sala trees with flowers in full blossom.
