Hongfo Pagoda: Tejaprabha Buddha

CHINA, Ningxia, Yinchuan; Western Xia period

This painting was discovered in the Hongfo Pagoda Heavenly Palace. Tejaprabha Buddha, with a nimbus, an aureole, and a mandorla, is in the center of the painting. The Buddha wears a red monastic robe and sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne. Around the base of the throne, the Eleven Luminaries stand on clouds connected by a rainbow. Each luminary has a nimbus and is dressed in fine robes. The Twelve Zodiac Signs were painted within small circles around the top of the painting, but only eight are visible due to damage. A heavenly palace and groups of heavenly beings standing on clouds are painted above and beside the Buddha.
