Ajanta Cave 2: Thousand Buddhas (detail)

Ajanta Cave 2: Thousand Buddhas

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad

These images are located on the right, left, and back walls of the antechamber and an inscription of offering is found on the right side of the back wall. The Thousand Buddhas possibly represent one of the miracles performed by the Buddha in Sravasti. The Buddha images are arranged in a compact fashion on the wall. All the Buddhas sit on lotus thrones, their heads framed with nimbuses and the bodies encircled by aureoles. The robes of the Buddhas cover both shoulders and vary in color. They are all similar in size and their hands form a series of different mudras.
