Ajanta Cave 2: Columns

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad

The columns of Ajanta Cave 2 are covered with elaborate paintings and carvings, creating a grandiose atmosphere. This column is located at the back of the main hall. The front of the square column base features a naga king and queen seated together with an attendant and on the corners of the base are reliefs of Vaisravana, Heavenly King of the North. The column shaft is embellished with foliated patterns and a semicircular lotus pattern, and the upper section is further decorated with oval plates, each of which exhibits a unique relief image surrounded by tamarind branches. On the upper part of the shaft, four yaksas are depicted supporting the capital in their upraised arms. In the center of the capital is a stupa worshipping scene, and on either side are apsaras.
