Ajanta Cave 6: Buddha Teaching the Dharma

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad

These figures are situated in the main shrine on the upper level of Cave 6. The serene presence of Sakyamuni Buddha graces the shrine. His hands form the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra and he is seated in full lotus position. A Dharma wheel, two deer, and two lions are carved in relief on the front of the throne. An attendant Bodhisattva stands on either side of the Buddha. They wear jeweled crowns and hold whisks. Along either side of the shrine are three standing Buddhas, each with their hands in the varada (wish-granting) and vitarka (teaching) mudra. Only traces of color remain on the figures, though the sculpting details are still well preserved.
