Phyang Monastery Central Hall: Vairocana Buddha

Phyang Monastery Central Hall: Vairocana Buddha

INDIA, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh

Located on the south wall of the central hall of Phyang Monastery, this mural was painted by Ghewa Sumpa Kyap. Foremost among the Five Dhyani Buddhas, Vairocana Buddha represents the wisdom of emptiness, radiating light in all directions to awaken the seed of enlightenment in all sentient beings.
The white skinned Vairocana, wearing a five-leaf crown with fluttering ribbons attached to the sides, sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne. The Buddha is adorned with ornaments and wears a tight upper garment that leaves the chest bare. Both the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet are red. A spiraling cloud pattern runs around the top of the nimbus. Colorful lines are painted within the aureole. A red-bodied attendant wearing a golden crown and ornaments stands on the left.
