Beopjusa Temple: Great Maitreya Buddha

Gilt bronze

Beopjusa Temple: Great Maitreya Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Boeun

This statue, completed in 1990,was built on the site of the original temple’s main hall and is dedicated to world peace and national unification. The giant figure is a reproduction of the original image that dates to the temple’s foundation, which was confiscated and melted down to make coins in 1872.
The statue stands on a lotus pedestal with hands in the abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras. Seven Bodhisattvas riding on clouds are visible within the inner rim of the flame-patterned nimbus. The granite platform underneath the statue is actually a hall dedicated to Maitreya Buddha and a museum.
