Charsadda: Maitreya Teaching in Tusita Heaven

PAKISTAN, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Charsadda

This Gandharan relief was excavated at Charsadda, and is believed to be part of the base of a Buddha statue. Maitreya sits in the center underneath a canopy. The figure has a topknot that has an image of the Buddha in the center. The face is rounded, has large eyes, a bulbous nose, mustache, and full lips. Two bands of jewels are worn around the head, and other pieces of jewelry include large earrings, necklace, and bracelets. The Buddha sits cross-legged on a throne with a triangular backrest. His right hand is raised with palm facing inwards, while the left hand holds a vase. Five figures are located on either side resulting in a balanced composition. The figures are dressed in short or long garments, and have clear facial features. The folds of the clothing are realistic and give a dynamic feel to the sculpture. The curtains on either side of the carving lend a sense of dignity to the scene.
