Amaravati: Stupa

INDIA, Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati; Satavahana period

The relief originally decorated the base of the Amaravati Great Stupa and represents a likeness of it, although it is now damaged at the top and sides. Lotus medallions are between the posts upholding the ralings. A pair of lions facing outwards and mounted on posts guards the entrance. Another pair of lions crouche on the railings facing each other on either side of the five pillared gateway arch. A pair of dwarves stands outside the gateway at ground level, and each supports a bowl above their head.
Two circular medallions are located at the very center of the stupa base just within the gateway. The lower one depicts the Buddha teaching in Tusita Heaven, while the upper one shows the Great Departure of Prince Siddhartha from his father’s palace. Illustrated carvings of Jataka tales, or the events from the Life of the Buddha, decorate the upper railings and around the stupa.
