Ink and color on silk
This 14th century painting resembles a depiction of the Sakyamuni Buddha Triad kept at Taisanji Temple in Hyogo. It was listed as an Important Cultural Property in 1901.
Clad in a colorful monastic robe, Sakyamuni Buddha sits on a lotus throne atop a Sumeru base. On the right, Manjusri Bodhisattva sits on the back of a lion, wearing a five-Buddha headdress and holding a ruyi (wish-fulfilling talisman). Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is shown on the left, riding on a white elephant and holding a lotus flower. An attendant stands below each Bodhisattva, leading their mount with a rope. The elegant colors, fine gold highlights, and delicate decorations on the clothing reflect the influence from paintings of the Chinese Song dynasty (960–1279).
