Frontispieces of the Lotus Sutra - Fascicle 8

Frontispieces of the Lotus Sutra

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty

These frontispieces are part of a rare eight-fascicle version of the Lotus Sutra created in 1081 by Seongwon of Geumsansa Temple. The frontispieces of each fascicle illustrate the Buddha Teaching the Dharma, and have floral patterns and scrolling vines on the back.
On the frontispiece for Fascicle 1, Sakyamuni Buddha is shown sitting in full lotus position on a Sumeru throne in the center of the frontispiece. In front of the throne, an incense burner and offerings are placed upon an altar. Many great Bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, monastics, and devotees surround the Buddha to listen to the Dharma. The frontispiece for fascicle eight shows the Buddha sitting on the right, accompanied by six disciples. On the left, there are several small scenes from the sutra, separated by trees, rivers, and flowers.
