Mogao Cave 17: Seated Buddha

Ink and color on paper

Mogao Cave 17: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This painting portrays the Buddha with a red nimbus and a blue aureole. The Buddha is dressed in a black robe and sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne. Both hands form the vitarka (teaching) mudra. There is a blank cartouche on the right, and a short inscription on the left. The Buddha resembles the figures in the Thousand Buddha murals of the Mogao Caves, indicating that they were painted at the same time.
