Guge Cave 126: Paying Respect to the Buddha

CHINA, Tibet, Ngari

This picture is painted below the image of Amitayus Buddha on the left side of the north wall of Cave 126. Dated from the 16th century, it depicts two male and two female members of the royal family paying respect to the Buddha.
The figure on the right in the top register wears a red turban, a red robe adorned with yellow floral patterns, and a blue cape. Seated on a couch, he holds his right hand in front of his chest and places his left hand on his knee. Beside him, the figure with a white turban is thought to be his son. He wears a red robe and a yellow cape. He holds his hands in the same position as his father, but his left hand holds a jewel. A floral rug covers his knees. On the left there are two female figures seated side by side on a long couch. They have black hair that hangs down behind their shoulders and wear black robes with a sleeveless top decorated with black dots.
In front of the four figures, there are three red tables with bowls and white cloths placed on them. There is another table in the top right corner with a unique flame-shaped wish-fulfilling jewel in the center and two other wish-fulfilling jewels on both sides. In the bottom register, there is a row of monks and devotees making offerings. They carry bolts of cloth on their shoulders, hold coral in their hands, or offer butter lamps.
