Donghwasa Temple Geumdangam Hermitage Sumajejeon Hall: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Daegu; Joseon dynasty

The statue from the early Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) was influenced by the style from the preceding Goryeo dynasty (918–1392). The influence is seen in the folds of the monastic robe over the abdomen and legs. The Buddha sits in a full lotus position, with the long fingers forming a mudra. The body is slightly disproportionate with the upper body being longer and the legs shorter. The monastic robe is opened at the front to reveal the inner garment.
