Mogao Cave 328: Seated Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty

This Bodhisattva is enshrined on the right side within the back (west) wall niche. The figure is slim and sits elegantly in the relaxation posture. The Bodhisattva has a high topknot, an oval face, and is adorned with a long stole, a necklace, and other ornaments. The left arm is raised slightly while the right rests on the knee. A long lower garment is draped in delicate folds over the throne, its hues of dark and bright red embellished with gold leaf and accented with mineral blue and green. The double-layered nimbus behind the Bodhisattva is red in the center with a colorful floral motif in the outer ring, and a crown of red flames atop it.
