Danyun was a monk and artist who renounced at the age of 12 in Changle Temple in Zhejiang, and received full ordination at the age of 19. He studied the teachings of the Tiantai school at Guanzong Temple in Zhejiang and later learned under Master Yinguang at Taiping Temple in Shanghai, after which he remained diligent in the practice of the Pure Land school.
Danyun was skilled in both painting and calligraphy. His calligraphic works include 28 Praises of the Lotus Sutra, which was popular among Buddhists in Japan, and Seven-Character Couplet, currently collected in Ho’s Calligraphy Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan.
