Ren Toutuo, originally known as Tao Runai, was a monk from Ningxiang, Changsha. He was appointed as a junior secretary in the Hanlin Academy during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), after which he went into reclusion. It was not until later life that he renounced.
Skilled in poetry and calligraphy, a number of stele inscriptions by Ren are still kept in the various temples he visited. His extant works include Seven-Character Poem, kept at Ho’s Calligraphy Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan, in addition to several collections of poetry.
