Kumtura Valley Entrance Cave 21: Ceiling - Bodhisattvas

Kumtura Valley Entrance Cave 21: Ceiling

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

The domed ceiling of Valley Entrance Cave 21 features 13 segments separated by lines radiating out from a lotus in the center. The lotus is approximately 1 m in diameter and has a core which is in terracotta color and bordered by red and green rings. The lotus itself is bordered by another red ring with overlapping petals within it. From the red ring radiates 13 white lines, which divide into 13 segments in alternating red and green backgrounds.
Bodhisattvas are depicted within these segments, each one standing barefoot on a lotus in various postures, forming a mudra or holding a garland. The figures face alternating directions and each Bodhisattva wears a unique headdress. Adorned with necklaces, armlets, and bracelets, the ornately decorated Bodhisattvas have white skin washed in pink, with facial features unique to the Kuchean style.
