Kumtura Cave 79: Uighur Donors

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu

This image is located on the front of the platform in the center of the cave. It depicts two groups of donors making offerings, painted with ink outlines and light coloring. Three monks, portrayed on the left, are dressed in monastic robes, each with palms joined and holding a lotus. Beside each of the monks are inscriptions of their names, the second of which reads, “Vinaya Master Faxing.”
Another monk is found on the right, behind whom is a man wearing Uighur attire, with a sash belt and long boots. A woman wearing a Chinese dress and standing with palms joined is depicted behind the man, and between the two groups, a small boy dressed in Uighur attire looks to the right with palms joined.
