
Also known as Yuanyun, Huishan Jiexian’s original name was Wang Han. He was born in Taicang, Suzhou. Huishan was a calligrapher and painter, in addition to being a monk of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism.
After renouncing under Master Sanmei of Baohuashan in Jiangsu at the age of 35, Huishan continued his studies at Dizang Temple in Jiangsu and Lingyin Temple in Zhejiang. He eventually became the successor of Chan Master Hongli of Lingyin Temple. Huishan became the abbot of Zhenru Temple in Jiangxi in 1651, and he later resided in a number of other temples before eventually settling as abbot of Lingyin Temple.
