Longhua Temple: Maitreya Buddha

The statue was excavated in 1983 from the site of Longhua Temple and depicts Maitreya Buddha seated cross-legged in meditation upon a Sumeru throne that rests on a four-legged stand. The simple figure has a disproportionately large head and wears a wide-sleeved monastic robe that covers both shoulders. The mandorla behind is ablaze with flame and surrounds an aureole and an unusual oval nimbus.
The inscription carved into the stand identifies the figure and its dedication by a devotee with the surname of Liu, to 517 of the Northern Wei dynasty.
