Yingci

CHINA, Anhui, Huangshan; Qing dynasty

Yingci, born Yu Duo and also known as Nianhua Laoren, was a monk and calligrapher from Shexian county in Huangshan. Although he studied Chan Buddhism under monk Zhikai at Tianning Temple in Jiangsu, he was meticulous in giving Avatamsaka teachings. His written works include Treasury of the True Dharma Eye.
Also adept in calligraphy and poetry, his calligraphic work Self Vigilance of Nianhua Laoren was engraved on the Stele Wall at Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
