Lin Zexu

CHINA, Fujian, Fuzhou; Qing dynasty

Lin Zexu, who was known posthumously as Wenzhong, was a well-known politician and calligrapher from Houguan (present day Fuzhou) of Fujian. He held various official positions and eventually became known for his contributions to improving irrigation systems, implementing relief programs, reforming the currency system, and quelling border uprisings. Lin was posthumously conferred the title of the Prince’s Tutor, and was also said to be the “first man to open his eyes to the world” in modern China (1840–1919).
Lin was an expert in poetry and calligraphy. His works include Lin Wenzhong’s Transcriptions of Sutras and Mantras for Daily Recitation, a booklet which contained the Amitabha Sutra, Diamond Sutra, Heart Sutra, Great Compassion Dharani, and Mantra for Rebirth in the Pure Land. These transcriptions were written while he was 22 years old and serving as an aide to the Inspector-General of Fujian, Zhang Shicheng, who influenced him to engage in the Pure Land school practice. According to Sequel to Collection of Monk Yinguang’s Praises, he carried the booklet of transcriptions everywhere he went so he could be faithful to his chanting sessions.
Other works of calligraphy by Lin include Dharma Quotes and Living Mottos, both of which are engraved on the Stele Wall of Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
