Yangzhou Tomb: Plaque with Seated Buddha

CHINA, Jiangsu, Yangzhou; Five Dynasties

This gold plaque was discovered in a tomb from Yangzhou in 1997. It was created using repoussé technique.
The plaque has a depiction of a Buddha seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne. The Buddha wears a crown, chest ornaments, and robe decorated with a bead pattern. A mandorla made of five delicately engraved lotuses fringed with flower petals surrounds the Buddha, who has his palms joined in reverence.
The use of repoussé technique in the creation of such gold plaques was quite common during the Five Dynasties period.
