Dazu Rock Carvings Shizhuanshan Niche 2: Master Zhigong and Disciple

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu; Northern Song dynasty

This niche is 2.54 m wide, 2.44 m high, and 1.72 m deep. It features carvings of Chan Master Zhigong and a disciple. Zhigong wears a cloth hat, short boots, and a long robe with wide sleeves. Knots are tied at his chest and waist. The disciple has short hair and wears a simple, round-collared garment with narrow sleeves. He carries a stick over his shoulders, with objects hanging on either end. Hanging on one side is a fangdou (a square measuring tool), a scale, and a weight. A broom hangs from the opposite side. The inscription accompanying the carving dates from 1085 and is written with the name Wen Weijian of Yueyang.
