Dafo Temple Cave: Great Buddha

Dafo Temple Cave

CHINA, Shandong, Jinan

The Dafo (Great Buddha) Temple Cave, which is included among the Qingtongshan (Bronze Mountain) Rock Carvings, has an apsidal layout and a flat ceiling. Inside the cave is the Great Buddha of Qingtongshan, which is approximately 6 m high, excluding the throne. The Great Buddha wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders and drapes over the square throne to the floor. The figure sits on the throne in full lotus position, and forms the dhyana (meditation) mudra. From the style and form of the statue, it can be approximately dated to the Sui dynasty (581–618). Two seated Buddhas in a small niche with an inscription dating to 748 can be found to the left of the Great Buddha. The Dafo Temple Cave is listed as a Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.
