Xingche

CHINA, Jiangxi; Ming to Qing dynasty

Xingche was a monk and artist with an original family name of Liu and a nickname of Xizhao. Tonsured at the age of 20, he studied under Master Hongjue at Nengren Temple in Jiangxi and was able to quickly familiarize himself with the sutras. He assumed the abbot role at Nengren Temple during the rule of Emperor Kangxi (reigned 1661–1722) of the Qing dynasty. Later, Xingche studied in Shanghai and stayed at Xiduo Temple. Skillful in poetry and calligraphy, Xingche painted plums and bamboo with clean and strong brushstrokes.
