Buddha Triad

Gilt bronze

Buddha Triad

KOREA; Three Kingdoms period

The cross-legged Buddha with hands in abhaya (fearlessness) and varada (wish-granting) mudras is flanked by smaller standing Bodhisattvas who are wearing crowns and robes. While the Bodhisattvas’ nimbuses are plain, the Buddha’s nimbus is ornate, consisting of a Dharma wheel with a decorated outer rim and a lotus hub. The composition is contained within a broken mandorla. The sculpture contains features from the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE).
