Kongobuji Temple: Casket Seal Dharani Pagoda

JAPAN, Wakayama, Ito; Kamakura period

This Casket Seal Dharani Pagoda is made of gilt bronze and consists of a base, body, and spire. There are inscriptions on the Sumeru base. Reverse corbeling appears beneath the square body, and more corbeling appears above. In the center of the body, there is a circle which is slightly raised with a carving of the Sanskrit seed syllable for Diamond Realm. The square base of the spire is stepped, followed by an inverted bowl, nine stacked rings, and a jewel. At the corners of the base there are plantain leaves.
