Wenfeng Temple Pagoda

Wenfeng Temple Pagoda

CHINA, Jiangsu, Yangzhou

The pagoda was built from donations raised by monk Zhencun in 1582 during the Ming dynasty. It was damaged by an earthquake in 1668 and repaired the following year. In 1853 it suffered fire damage in wartime and repairs were not carried out until after 1912. It was listed as a Municipal Cultural Heritage Site in 1962.
The seven-story, octagonal pagoda is 44.8 m high and is made of brick and timber. The stone Sumeru base is low and has a set of steps on each side facing the four cardinal directions. The chamber on the first story contains a number of stone tablet. The eaves are upturned steeply at the corners. Each story is accessible to visitors and is enclosed by balustrades. Additionally, each story has four arched doorways alternating with those above and below. The octagonal pyramidal roof is surmounted by an iron spire.
