Shijia Zhenru Relic Pagoda

Shijia Zhenru Relic Pagoda

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu

The pagoda is located on the east side of the Great Buddha Bay in Dazu. It was built during the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). The three-tier, square, stone structure is 6 m high. On each side of the first tier are arched niches containing a standing Sakyamuni Buddha wearing a monastic robe and forming a mudra. Above one of the niches, the phrase “Sakyamuni Tathagata Relic Pagoda” in Chinese is engraved. The eaves above the Buddha images are damaged. The niches of the second tier are rectangular and supported by upturned lotuses. Each niche contains a seated statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. The octagonal eaves of the second tier are upturned at the corners. The third tier consists of a lotus base, an unadorned body, eaves, and three jewels as the spire.
