Cheongnyongsa Temple Great Hero Hall: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Yecheon; Unified Silla dynasty

The Buddha is located within the Great Hero Hall of Cheongnyongsa Temple and was listed as Treasure No. 424 in 1965. The figure sits in full lotus position on a lotus throne, wearing monastic robes with stylistic folds around the arms and legs. The Buddha’s right hand is in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra and the left hand rests on the sole of the foot. The mandorla is decorated with flames and has a united nimbus and aureole with floriated motifs. A three-tier pedestal supports the lotus throne. The pedestal starts with an octagonal base decorated with floriated insets, followed by an eight-petal inverted lotus, then an octagonal pillar with carved panels of seated Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
