Nalanda: Stupa

INDIA, Bihar

While most miniature stupas were made of stone, this is a rare example made from bronze.
The design of the stupa reflects the style from the Pala period (circa 8th–12th century). The base is square and supported on four legs. Staircases on all four sides are flanked by a pair of seated Bodhisattvas that may collectively represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas of Vajrayana Buddhism. Each side of the octagonal structure above the square base has a columned niche. The images within the recessions depict the standard eight events of Sakyamuni Buddha’s life. A bowl-shaped stupa decorated with lotus petals at the base is above the octagonal section. The harmika platform at the apex supports eight stacked rings.
