Gilt bronze
The figure was probably discovered in Melayur, Tamil Nadu. The pedestal that supported the throne is missing. An inscription in Devanagari on the base of the statue reads, “Of those Dharmas which arise from a cause, the Tathagata has stated the cause, and also the cessation,” an excerpt found in the Abhiniskramana Sutra.
The figure sits in half lotus position and wears a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare. The right hand is in vitarka (teaching) mudra. The pillars on either side of the throne are accompanied by mythical creatures being ridden by human figures. The throne back is decorated with intricate foliage and leads to a canopy with a finial that consists of a jewel mounted on a double lotus with openwork scroll-cloud ornaments on either side.
