Mandala of Aksobhya Buddha

INDIA

This work from eastern India is a mandala in the form of an eight-petal lotus. The petals of the lotus close to form a lotus bud and open to reveal the Aksobhya Buddha Mandala at the center. There is a vajra in front of the Buddha, who has a round face and a forehead inlaid with brass and silver. His features bear characteristics to that seen in the Bagan dynasty (circa 849–1287). On the inside of each of the eight petals, there is a Bodhisattva. Heavenly beings together with lotus stems and scrolling vines support the lotus from beneath. The inscription around the round base is a dedication by Dantanaga, a lay Buddhist.
