Komyoji Temple: Child-Granting Avalokitesvara

JAPAN, Ehime, Shikokuchuo; Edo period

Praying to Avalokitesvara who grants children or protects those who were pregnant or were with child was at one time a popular practice. The figure here was originally carved into a living conifer but the tree was later cut down in order to preserve the carving. Inside the narrow cave-like opening, the Bodhisattva cradles a baby that peacefully sucks its thumb. The figure’s hair is covered with a shawl while the body is wrapped in heavy clothing. There is a radiating nimbus behind the figure’s head.
