This unusually well-preserved and rare linen canopy was recovered from Mogao Cave 17 in Dunhuang. It would originally have been suspended on high poles above a statue of the Buddha.
The rectangular canopy is 105 cm long and 91 cm wide; its height when hung is 25.5 cm. There is a lotus blossom in the center, surrounded by a ring of lotus petals, and at each corner there is a quarter segment with a floral design. The remainder of the canopy is decorated with cloud patterns. Hanging down from the four sides, there are valances with colorful banner designs. Despite the age of the canopy, the colors are still vivid.
