Xuechuang Puming

CHINA, Shanghai; Yuan dynasty

Xuechuang Puming, whose family name was Cao, was a monk and painter in addition to the Dharma heir of Chan Master Huiji Yuanxi of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. He also served as the abbot of Nengren Temple and Yunyan Temple, both of which are located in Suzhou.
Xuechuang was a highly proficient painter of nature, particularly orchids, and had a great influence on the Japanese style of painting the flower. It is said that every household during his time contained an orchid painting in his style. His work, Bamboo in the Wind, is now kept in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA.
